Symptoms Of A Failed Reversing Valve

• System will only cool, or will only heat - will not change over
• Unit runs but blows cool air on heating and warm air on cooling
• Valve does not shift when the solenoid is energised
• Continuous hissing or gurgling from the outdoor unit as refrigerant bleeds internally
• Poor capacity in both modes - internal leak across the valve slide
• Unit will not complete a defrost cycle in heating

Check First

Before condemning the valve body, check the solenoid coil and its supply. A failed coil, an open circuit winding or a control fault gives the same no-changeover symptom and is far cheaper to replace than the valve.

This part is fitted into a sealed refrigerant circuit. In Australia the work must be carried out by a technician holding a current ARC refrigerant handling licence. The system must be recovered, the valve brazed in under nitrogen purge to avoid internal oxidisation, then evacuated and recharged to the nameplate. It is illegal to vent refrigerant to atmosphere.
