Fujitsu Air Conditioner Outdoor Unit Choke Coil

This is a replacement choke coil, also called the reactor, for Fujitsu air conditioner outdoor units. It sits in the inverter power circuit between the rectifier and the compressor drive, where it smooths the DC bus and limits current surges. A failed choke normally takes the outdoor unit out of service completely and can damage the inverter board if it is left in place.

When To Replace

Replace the choke coil when the outdoor unit will not start and the indoor unit reports a communication or inverter fault, when the unit trips the circuit breaker or the safety switch on start up, when the coil windings read open circuit or short to the core on a meter, or when the coil is visibly scorched, has a burnt smell, or the varnish has bubbled. Have the inverter board checked at the same time, as a failed choke and a failed board often go together.

Fitting

This part must be fitted by a licensed refrigeration mechanic or a qualified electrician holding the appropriate ARC licence where refrigerant work is involved. Isolate the unit at the circuit breaker and allow the DC bus capacitors to discharge fully before touching anything inside the electrical enclosure. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting it, transfer the connections one at a time, and carry out insulation resistance and earth continuity tests before returning the unit to service.

Notes

The DC bus capacitors in an inverter outdoor unit hold a dangerous charge for several minutes after power is removed. Do not open the electrical enclosure unless you are qualified and have confirmed the bus voltage has fallen to a safe level.
