Simpson Westinghouse Clothes Dryer Rear Drum Support And Spigot Kit

This is a replacement rear drum support and spigot kit for Simpson, Westinghouse and Electrolux vented clothes dryers. The spigot is the short shaft at the centre of the rear of the drum, and the support is the bearing surface it turns in. Together they carry the back of the drum and keep it running true. They are a wearing part, and once worn the drum drops, drags on the rear bulkhead and gets noisy.

When To Replace

Replace the kit when the dryer rumbles, grinds or squeals while the drum turns, when the drum can be pushed up and down or side to side by hand more than a few millimetres, when there are wear marks or metal dust on the rear bulkhead where the drum has been rubbing, or when the drum is stiff to turn by hand with the belt removed. A worn rear support puts extra load on the belt and the motor, so it is worth fixing early.

Fitting

Isolate the dryer at the power point before starting. Remove the front or rear panel depending on the model, take the tension off the belt and lift the drum out. Drive or press the old spigot out of the rear of the drum and remove the old support from the bulkhead. Fit the new support, refit the spigot squarely so the drum sits centred, then refit the drum and belt, check the drum spins freely by hand, and run a short cycle empty before loading it.

Notes

Replace the belt at the same time if it is glazed, cracked or has been slipping. A dryer that has been running on a worn rear support has usually been chewing the belt as well.
